Leading film and broadcast industry people share their knowledge and experience. Directors, Cover Your Bases! When hiring your Director of Photography, be sure to have a back up ready to hire on at a moment's notice. This is especially true for first-time film directors; I have heard many stories of D.P.'s trying to sabotage first-time directors. In fact, I experienced this myself when hiring the D.P. to do my last feature. I knew I was in trouble when he launched into his own personal vision of the piece -- even to what he thought of the actors. I found myself apologizing to the crew for the D.P.'s ego! Remember, once you are into the shooting process it is too late. Have your backup ready in advance. by:
